In 2018, Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead announced that criminal illegal immigrants would not be held with ICE detainees in county jail and would instead be released back on the streets.

Now, we are seeing how the Sheriff’s policies have played out after an illegal alien ran over a state trooper in North Carolina and was released back onto the streets with a $5,000 bond.

North Carolina State Trooper D. R. Hudson was struck be a vehicle driven by Patricia Canseco-Cortes, 26, an illegal immigrant, and thrown off the highway.

Hudson was transported to a nearby hospital and released after being treated for his injuries.

Cortes was charged with a DWI and released on $5,000 bond rather than being detained on account of her immigration status to be deported back to her country of origin.

Birkhead has maintained one of seven of North Carolina’s ‘sanctuary counties’ in the state.

On September 23, North Carolina State Trooper D. R. Hudson was struck by a vehicle and thrown onto the highway.

Trooper Hudson had a vehicle stopped on the shoulder of U.S. 15-501 in Durham, and was standing on the driver’s side of the car when the crash occurred.

A Honda Civic, driven by Patricia Canseco-Cortes, 26, hit the stopped vehicle, according to court documents.

In a statement, Sgt. Marcus Bethea of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported:

After impact, the rotation of the vehicles resulted in Trooper Hudson being struck and hurled into the roadway.
Trooper Hudson was able to call for help and transported to a nearby hospital. He has since been released.

Canseco-Cortes was charged with DWI, careless and reckless driving, driving without a license and failure to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle.

Despite the suspect’s immigration status, she was quickly released from the Durham County Detention Center on $5,000 bond.
